Bert

The problem with being a night owl and not having a job is that I get the distinct pleasure of taking Bert the giant chocolate lab out to the restroom whenever he needs to. He has no  qualms about nudging you over and over with his big wet nose to let you know he needs to go out. Don’t get me wrong this is a lovely quality because who would prefer to wake up to a huge wet spot and the smell of dog urine? Not I! However, in that moment when I am snugly settled into bed and  almost at the point of drifting off to sleep, I want nothing to do with this activity.

Bert is a dog who knows what he wants and how to get it, if his nudging doesn’t get me up, he proceeds to whine, and if that doesn’t work he will bring out the big guns and let out a monstrous bark. A bark so loud that the walls shake, a bark that rattles my core and for that matter will wake up Lance. If we BOTH  had jobs then i would insist that we take turns being on Bert duty but as it stands he is the sole breadwinner and therefore deserves as much sleep as he can get.

Lately, Bert is having a hard time going up the stairs. As I mentioned earlier he is a monster of a dog even for a lab, and so I am not sure if he is just being pertinacious or if there is a physical reason why he is having trouble. This is yet another reason why it’s annoying to be the one to take him out.

Ultimately he is a joy and a treasure in my life. He has the sweetest disposition and follows you like… well a puppy dog. He stares at you with his big brown eyes and you know that this spirit only wants back what he so infinitely gives, love….well love and for someone to let him out at 2:30 in the morning.
